The Ingram Foundation’s Mission

The disease of addiction is one of the greatest challenges facing the United States today. The Ingram Foundation’s mission is to build partnerships with local businesses, health care professionals, and local communities to combat substance-use disorders through innovate recovery initiatives.

The Addiction Epidemic

Addiction impacts more than 121 million people in the United States each year. By damaging the delicate brain chemistry of the brain, addiction dramatically impacts the way a person thinks, feels, and reasons. It is a disease that destroys families, inflates medical costs, and claims hundreds of thousands of lives each year.

Despite these statistics, addiction is a largely misunderstood disease. Unlike cancer or diabetes, addiction is often viewed as a reflection of moral character or lack of will power. Because society has been slow to recognize addiction as a disease, a stigma has developed and persisted in preventing individuals and families from receiving the care that they need. According to a study by SAMHSA, of the 121 million people suffering from addiction only 10% of those receive treatment for their addiction. The reason behind the lack of treatment: treatment cost, access to treatment, and stigma.

The Mission in Action

As a society, we must work together to find ways of combating this terrible disease. The Ingram Foundation chooses to take up this fight through a series of strategic initiatives: fighting stigma through a public campaign and community building; addressing treatment costs through compassionate giving; and increasing access through an education initiative.
